Arteluce

A lighting and interior design company founded in Milan by Gino Sarfatti in the late 1930’s. Sarfartti’s approach to design was heavily influenced by his engineering background, which he used to merge functionality, simplicity and beauty into his lighting designs. Safartti’s hard work and success led Arteluce to become highly respected for their contribution to the modern architecture movement in lighting design during the 1950’s.

Arteluce’s contributions earned the Compasso d’Oro awards in 1954 and 1955 respectively, for pieces designed by Sarfatti. This award was established by Gio Ponti, and represented the highest quality of innovation and design for the field of Industrial Design. Safartti’s beloved company would later be absorbed by FLOS, a firm that honored the tradition and art of lighting design with innovation, in 1973. However, a number of Arteluce’s original pieces are on display in the permanent collection at the MoMA in New York.
